KLEX 2015: PULSE

Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX), an artist-run, grassroots international festival of experimental cinema and music, is back with its sixth edition, “KLEX 2015: PULSE”, 25-29th November 2015, Kuala Lumpur. The festival includes: KLEX open programmes, international guest programmes, video installations, film workshops, artists’ lectures and audio-visual and music performances. This year, the festival events will take place at several artist-run independent art spaces and an art institution: Lostgens’ Contemporary Artspace, FINDARS, Da Huang Pictures, and Department of Drama & Visuals at New Era University College. KLEX 2015 is made possible with the support of the above-mentioned venues, and from the Goethe-Institute Malaysia and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Kuala Lumpur.
KLEX OPEN PROGRAMMES
KLEX 2015 has received over 350 submissions from the open call, including works from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, UK, USA and more. From these submissions, the curatorial committee of Andrew Stiff, Chris Chong Chan Fui and Kok Siew Wai has selected 46 experimental shorts to create three KLEX Open Programmes and three single-channel video installations on LCD monitors.

INTERNATIONAL GUEST PROGRAMMES: AUSTRALIA, CANADA, GERMANY, POLAND, THAILAND
KLEX 2015 will showcase five guest programmes from Australia, Canada, Germany, Poland and Thailand. There will be two Berlinale Spotlight short film programmes from the prestigious 65th Berlin International Film Festival 2015, curated by Ms. Maike Mia Höhne; the animation programme of Play Poland Film Festival and O!PLA Across The Borders from Poland; the 16mm film programme from Australia, curated and presented by Richard Tuohy and the Melbourne Artist Film Workshop; the Vidéographe programme from Canada, curated and presented by Fabrizio Gilardino; and lastly, Transitional State programme from Thailand, curated and presented by Wuttin Chansataboot, who’d also be showing a single-channel video installation piece. Besides, Chansataboot, Tuohy and musician-visual artist Brian O’Reilly will be giving artists’ lectures on their practice.

AUDIO-VISUAL & MUSIC PERFORMANCE
This year, we have an extraordinary line-up with the audio-visual and music programme, featuring some internationally prominent figures in the experimental and improvised music scene such as Bob Ostertag (USA), Jaap Blonk (Netherlands) and Sachiko M (Japan). Also on the bill are Black Zenith (Australia/USA), dj sniff (Japan), Game of Patience (Australia/USA /Malaysia), Katsura Yamauchi (Japan), Max Riefer (Germany), Peter Ivan Edwards (USA); and our very own Goh Lee Kwang, HKPT, Kok Siew-Wai, Sudarshan Chandra Kumar, Wong Eng Leong and Yong Yandsen.

16MM HAND PROCESSING FILM WORKSHOPS
Join a one-day 16mm hand processing film workshop by Richard Tuohy and members of the Melbourne Artist Film Workshop (AFW)! Anyone interested is welcome. No experience necessary. Participants will shoot film with a Bolex 16mm camera, process colour film with chemicals, and finally project the film at the end of the workshop. Limited to 15 participants only. More info here.
