Artist Film Workshop Performance Programme

Four dual-projector 16mm performance works from AFW makers.

DETAIL

Hanna Chetwin & Francis Plagne
A two-projector 16mm film performance which explores the restriction of vision in order to focus the eye on miniscule details within an image. Roaming filmic spotlights slowly reveal a succession of images as live electronic sound mirrors the structure of the film.

Entopic Images
Giles Fielke
Overlayed images pits formal and narrative poles of cinema against the limits of the projection apparatus.

Image-wise Exposed
Dianna Barrie & Richard Tuohy
A performance project that brings “light sensitivity” to life on the screen.  Each performance produces a lingering “after image” of an otherwise imperceptible scene.

Alarm Interrupted
Richard Tuohy & Dianna Barrie
Two projectors, four loops.  Horizontal lines making both picture and sound. A work of phasing and interference.

Hanna Chetwin

Hanna Chetwin is an Australian filmmaker who works in experimental film. Her films have been included in numerous festivals, including the Florida Experimental Film Festival (FLEX) and the Melbourne International Film Festival (both 2015), and she has had collaborative work made with film lab Artist Film Workshop screened at the MCA in Sydney, AIEFF and Slopes Gallery, Melbourne (all 2014). She is an active member of Artist Film Workshop.

Francis Plagne

Francis Plagne is a musician from Melbourne whose work swings between songwriting and a variety of other approaches, including group improvisation, instrumental abstraction and domestic musique concrète. He has been performing live regularly since 2005 and had released recordings on Albert’s Basement, Breakdance the Dawn, Lost and Lonesome, Kye Records and his own Mould Museum label, among others. In addition to performing his own work either solo or with a band, he has performed and recorded in improvised and other arrangements with Oren Ambarchi, Anthea Caddy, Andrew Chalk, Marco Fusinato, Dean Roberts, Valerio Tricoli and Joe Talia, among others. Since 2011, he has occasionally convened a variably sized ensemble to perform scores by composers such as Manfred Werder, Christian Wolff and Toshi Ichiyanagi.

Giles Fielke

Giles Fielke is an orthographer interested by constitutive gaps in media, between the image and language. He is currently working on a Phd project which investigates the pharmacology of cinema and systems for organisation in the context of the history of modern art.

Dianna Barrie

Dianna Barrie found her way into filmmaking as a middle ground between the pursuit of abstract music and philosophy. Ever pushing the limits of the hand processing of super 8 led to the establishment of nanolab with Richard Tuohy, and into the intersection of hand making and industrial cinema technology. This exploration has spread beyond individual work to the establishment of Artist Film Workshop, where celluloid is embraced and advocated by a community of practitioners in Melbourne.

Richard Tuohy
