0 1 ZERO ONE

The KLEX 2019 Open Programmes feature experimental shorts selected from the international open call. We received over 180 submissions from around the world, including Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The theme for this year is “01 Zero One”. It is a direct reference to KLEX’s history, as the festival has been running for the 10th consecutive year. On a conceptual level, “0 1” can be interpreted as binary codes; of nothingness and existence; of a recurrent life cycle, and other possible interpretations. The film curatorial team has selected 30 works to be screened in three different programmes, namely: “Realness 101”, “Nature’s Binary” and “Me Myself Are Yours”.

PROGRAMME I: REALNESS 101

“Shapes form the line. Lines moving through the night sky like the moon, or the shadowy shapes cast by our building interiors. Shapes form real sensual desires in porceline whites and our desires for hyper realness in the garbage we consume and exhume from our bodies. Shapes separate real truths from those told for the selfish power of the storyteller. Let’s get real, 101 style, and let’s talk about the line that shapes our truth.” (Chris Chong)

PROGRAMME 2: NATURE’S BINARY

“Naturally, unnaturally, we ask questions of our artificial construction. We kill animals and insects to construct our own physical and mental health. We dream of understanding the difference between natural form against unnaturally manipulation. In the meanwhile, we continue to circle the sewage drain in 4K splendour.” (Chris Chong)

PROGRAM 3: ME MYSELF ARE YOURS

“ ‘I’ am removed from the adage ‘Me Myself and I’. I am all yours. ou are not for yourself. You dance away in protest, trying to remember why you are dancing in the first place. The memory of you, as you once remember, is grey. You duplicate yourself so you can see yourself better. A mirror for both selves is needed; repeatedly talking to yourself until the language you speak is what you want to hear. You need constant reflection as social media steals your identity daily. Perhaps it’s time to move. A physical move. Or just a spiritual one.” (Chris Chong)
