NAO’s musical form developed from the design theory, with math-like equation rhythm, encompasses a mixture of joyous melodies yet mix with psychedelic atmosphere. we are as complicated as a “human being” …… Influenced by Japan’s rich musical expression, it’s said to be the most beautiful manifestation of a diverse mix. With a decade of music history, it’s one of the few Malaysian bands across multiple music scenes. Having done numerous overseas tours and performances, its music has transformed from rage to peculiarly interesting and lively; focusing on creative and joyous absolute music as its musical blueprint.

Kuchithesizer

The musical composition of Kuchithesizer is based upon various voice samples from Japanese vocal performer Makigami Koichi. These sound generated through extended vocal techniques were manipulated through the turntable and with various analog filters. Custom software tools built with Jitter and Openframeworks were used to generate the images, most of it in reaction to sonic characteristics of the original composition.

Hail the Bodhisattva of Collected Junk

This experimental music video is based on a poem that both satirizes and celebrates local culture in Taiwan. “Hail the Bodhisattva of Collected Junk,” the title of both the song and the poem, is a play on the Buddhist phrase “Hail the Bodhisattva Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy.” The poem refers to local junk vendors, who repeatedly call out “sell them to me” as they walk from neighborhood to neighborhood looking for unwanted household items, typically scrap metal, tools and electronics.

Ye Mimi is a Taiwanese poet and filmmaker. A graduate of both the Creative Writing Department at Dong Hwa University in Shoufeng, Taiwan, and the Film Department at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she is the author of two volumes of poetry and has internationally exhibited several of her poetry films.

ALOR SETAR PULSE (2015), 4:55 min/sound

Andrew Stiff, Malaysia/UK

This video is an exploration of hand painted sunblinds in Alor Setar, Kedah. We are naturally drawn to patterns and order, and even disorder that is presented through a structured or ordered space or medium. It is because of this we see the world sequentially, even though events and communication do not happen sequentially. Using the theme of pulse, the motion of the blinds swaying in the evening breeze, is fractured into a series of cut edits that balance nonlinear disorder against the linear order of colour and context.

ANDREW STIFF studied painting at the Chelsea School of Art in London, and gained his masters at the University of Liverpool in England where he explored his interest in digital media and architecture. Alongside Andrew’s creative practice he is also an educator, he was the Deputy Dean of the School of Media art and Design, at Linton University College in Malaysia from 2012-2015. His current post is the Senior Educator and Research Coordinator for CoCD (Centre of Communication and Design) at RMIT University in Vietnam.

LULAI (2014), 6:30 mins/sound

LIM Chee-Yong, Malaysia
The video can be seen as a visitor’s sympathetic portrait of the Bajau Laut and Bajau Darat people from Mabul island, off the southeastern coast of Sabah, East Malaysia. This group of Bajau people is stateless. They have no nationality and thus do not enjoy benefits of citizenship. If they have been given a choice, will they choose to lead a “free” life as they are now?

LIM CHEE-YONG is a Malaysian fiction and documentary filmmaker. He graduated from New Era College in 2008, majoring in Drama and Visuals; and from the National Taiwan University of Art in 2013 in the Motion Picture Department. With the guidance from a few great teachers, Lim is introduced to the wonderful world of film and theater. Lim has involved in producing, directing and writing several short films, feature films, experimental films and documentary films.

MORNING (2011), 3:50 min/sound

KOK Siew-Wai, Malaysia

The artist was awaken by very loud barking of dogs early in the morning, and saw four dogs toying with a dead cat. She took out a camera and recorded the scene, witnessing a reality in nature that is blunt, intense and beyond human morality.

KOK SIEW-WAI is a video artist, vocal improviser and independent artist-organizer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She graduated from University at Buffalo and Alfred University, and had lived in USA from 1998-2005. SOLI (2013), 10:00 min/sound

Adrienne Marcus Raja, Malaysia

Soli follows the sun, symbolized by an enigmatic figure, Sole, as he explores the city and illuminates the lives of a series of lonely people. In a sequence of largely silent vignettes, it contrasts the blackness of their uncertainties with the bright light that investigates and illuminates them. Inspired by the image of Sol Invictus on the face of a Roman coin, symbolically lighting the darkness of self-destruction that we have in our own self and the pressure that forces us to make decisions in our lives.

ADRIENNE MARCUS RAJA is a filmmaker from Borneo, Malaysia. She holds an M.F.A. in Documentary Media from Ryerson University and a B.A. in Mass Communication from Curtin University. Through the 9th annual LIFT/imagineNATIVE Mentorship Program for 2013, Soli is her first directorial effort with film. Soli was shot on 16mm color stock with a Super16 Bolex camera and then edited on video. She has recently taken an interest in understanding the analog photographic and filmic medium as she continues to learn about the process of developing and printing in the darkroom.

ALOR SETAR PULSE (2015), 4:55 min/sound

ANDREW STIFF studied painting at the Chelsea School or Art in London, and gained his masters at the University of Liverpool in England where he explored his interest in digital media and architecture. Andrew Stiff’s research and creative practice is concerned with developing a visual language that explores the intricacies implicit in our built environment. The surface of the city is the visible manifestation of our endeavor to formalise, expand and innovate within the spaces that we create. The physical structures for the city are defined by the events that take place in and around them. The surface of this structure acts as a medium between the inhabitants and the city. This relationship is in continuous evolution, as technology manipulates and redefines the everyday patterns that have defined the city throughout the ages. The experience of the city is a temporal one, and I use moving image to reflect this experience.
