Founded in May 2014, SERIOUS PLAY IMPROV LAB (SPIL) is a monthly music series of KLEX Festival. It is an art laboratory focusing on music experimentation and improvisation. SPIL provides a platform for musicians from various backgrounds to collaborate and present a new collective expression through improvisation. Over the years, many local and international artists have initiated experimentations and collaborated in the SPIL series, enriching the experimental and improvised music scene in the region.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Gideon Alu8khan CHEN is a multi-instrumentalist known for his versatility. He is a guitar instructor, theatre performer and music composer. Alu8khan has been actively involved in various kinds of music including the underground, indie, new age, alternative and heavy metal; and is also active in local “performing arts” scene. Alu8khan is passionate and open to musical experimentations as he explores and learns various unique instruments such as Guqin, sitar, percussion, samisen, flute and the Australia native music instrument, didgeridoo. Through music, he finds his inner peace and true-life innovation.

REFLEX is a project by vocal improviser Siew Wai and saxophonist Yandsen. The duo first collaborated in 2006. They have been working together in various projects for more than a decade including concerts in Australia, Germany, Norway, the Philippines and Singapore. REFLEX creates musical conversations through attentive listening and improvisation.

Straits of Celaka is a one-man improv act by mandolin player Libau. Drawing from the improvisational works of Loren Mezzacane Connors and Jandek, Straits of Celaka’s instrumental excursions explore the subterranean superstitious corners of the tropical nusantara.
