Please welcome the River People Trio with Swiss Avant-Garde drummer, Christian Bucher, Philippines-based American-Expat alto saxophonist, Rick Countryman, and Filipino multi-disciplinary guitarist, Johnny Alegre! Supported act with Kok Siew-Wai (vocals) and Yong Yandsen (saxophones).

Swiss Avant-Garde drummer, Christian Bucher, and American-Expat alto saxophonist, from the Philippines, Rick Countryman have performed and recorded together for almost a decade. Their duo release “Estuary” received the Gold Dolphy 2018 award and described by Squidco.com as “a great example of the far reach of free jazz.” Filipino multi-disciplinary guitarist, Johnny Alegre is joining this project. Rick and Christian have performed in several of Johnny’s groups in Manila.

Founded in May 2014, SERIOUS PLAY IMPROV LAB (SPIL) is a monthly music series of KLEX Festival. It is an art laboratory focusing on music experimentation and improvisation. SPIL provides a platform for musicians from various backgrounds to collaborate and present a new collective expression through improvisation. Over the years, many local and international artists have initiated experimentations and collaborated in the SPIL series, enriching the experimental and improvised music scene in the region.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Swiss Avant-Garde drummer, Christian Bucher, and American-Expat alto saxophonist, from the Philippines, Rick Countryman have performed and recorded together for almost a decade. Their duo release “Estuary” received the Gold Dolphy 2018 award and described by Squidco.com as “a great example of the far reach of free jazz.” Filipino multi-disciplinary guitarist, Johnny Alegre is joining this project. Rick and Christian have performed in several of Johnny’s groups in Manila.

Rick Countryman currently has over 20 album releases, on 5 labels across Europe, Asia, and the United States, including multiple albums with legendary Japanese improvisational drummer, Sabu Toyozumi. He studied jazz improvisation, intervallic cycles and concepts, and extended techniques with Bert Wilson; and is heavily influenced by Eric Dolphy, Sonny Simmons and the 60s Free Jazz movement.

Christian Bucher studied at the University of Bern, the Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich, and with Pierre Favre, Willy Kotoun, Marcel Bernasconi and Andreas Hermann at the Lucerne Music College. He has extensive CDs, radio and TV recordings, and performed festival and concert tours in Australia, Bulgaria, China, Germany, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, the USA and Turkey.

Johnny Alegre is profiled in the books The Great Jazz Guitarists by Scott Yanow and the Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia of Philippine Art. In 2002, he formed Affinity and the first recorded work, “Stones of Intramuros”, was included in Adobo Jazz: A Portrait of the Filipino as a Jazz Artist. In 2008, he recorded Humanfolk, with NYC percussionist Susie Ibarra. In 2009, MCA released Johnny Alegre 3, a trio album with legends Ron McClure (bass) and Billy Hart (drums). He was MCA’s first jazz act from the Philippines.

From Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kok Siew-Wai started out as a video artist, now active as a vocal improviser and artist-curator/organizer. She has shown her videos, curatorial video programmes and performed in Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada and USA, including allEars Improvised Music Festival (Norway), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), CTM Festival (Germany), Hanoi New Music Festival (Vietnam), Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Nusasonic (Indonesia) amongst others. In music, Siew-Wai is interested in improvisation and the exploration of expressions with the human voice.

Yong Yandsen is a free jazz and improvised saxophonist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Yandsen has released albums through XingWu and Herbal Records in Malaysia, Utech Records (USA), Dream Sheep (Italy), and his solo debut on vinyl through Doubtful Sound (France). He has played at allEars Improvised Music Festival (Norway), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), Mosaic Music Festival (Singapore), amongst others. Yandsen, together with Darren Moore and Brian O’Reily, form the improvised trio called Game of Patience. They have toured to Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. In 2018, he joined another trio with Christian Meaas Svendsen and Paal Nilssen-Love. Yandsen has also done several solo tours to Japan and Taiwan. He is the co-founder of a Malaysian record label, LaoBan Records, focusing on releasing contemporary improvised music.
