We skipped a SPIL lab in June to focus on hosting the incredible cross-regional free jazz band Big Foot on 4th July, in which we had a full house! Next Saturday, SPIL 088 welcomes the homecoming of 3 Malaysian artists currently based in the west, Berlin-based Yee SueKi (dance), Illinois-based Chin Hong-Da (chinese flutes), Hawaii-based Chow JunYi (cello), and KL-based artist Sim Hoi Ling (dance). It’s the summer holiday gig for our homecoming folks! Mark your calendar, and bring a friend to heat up the July SPIL lab! And who knows, the house band might join in too!

Founded in May 2014, SERIOUS PLAY IMPROV LAB (SPIL) is a monthly music series of KLEX Festival. It is an art laboratory focusing on music experimentation and improvisation. SPIL provides a platform for musicians from various backgrounds to collaborate and present a new collective expression through improvisation. Over the years, many local and international artists have initiated experimentations and collaborated in the SPIL series, enriching the region’s experimental and improvised music scene.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Malaysian composer Chin Hong-Da music has been performed by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Khasma Piano Duo, No Exit New Music Ensemble, Bent Frequency, Ogni Suono Saxophone Duo, Patchwork, Newphonia Ensemble, among others. Besides his musical activities, he is an avid badminton player. hongdachin.com

Chow JunYi is a Malaysia-born Hawaii-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and improviser. Chow’s composition has been lauded by Financial Times for its “skilful contrasts in both volume and texture”. His thorough knowledge of skills and characteristics of both Chinese and Western instruments has made him a leading figure in merging music of East and West. His album “A Traveler’s Portrait” in collaboration with Seungmin Cha (South Korea) was nominated for the Global Music Award in 2018. His recent collaboration was with Pei-Ling Kao (Taiwan) to create live music for Kao’s solo dance production “One Body” in 2023.

Sim Hoi Ling is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply influenced by photography. Her work often centers around themes of decay and absurdities in daily life. She is passionate about exploring unconventional methods of image-making, and her diverse body of work includes printmaking, video art, installation, and performance. Her work was presented at festivals across Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, also collected internationally by collectors from the United States, Canada, Germany and Malaysia. She loves collecting sound in her free time and occasionally releases her experimental sound works under the group name DSGN. (dsgn.bandcamp.com).

Yee SueKi is a Malaysian dancer-choreographer (currently based in Berlin) who’s drawn to improvisation, site-specific work, and multidisciplinary experimentation and collaboration. With a Bachelor in Dance (ASWARA), she’s trained in contemporary dance, ballet, and various traditional folk and classical dances. Movement has become her entry point into understanding and exploring other art forms, providing diverse entry points into her work and expanding the horizons of research, creation, and presentation. In recent years, she started experimenting with soundscapes, photo/videography, and text, pushing the boundaries of her creative expression. Some major themes that have arisen in her works include (multi-)identities and fragmentation, memories, limitations and risks, the female body, and the ephemerality of the body, especially in connection to space and nature. Her choreographic works and dance films have been selected and presented in Malaysia, Mexico, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Brazil, and Ghana. Her other experiences include working as a dance pedagogue, programmer and artist-facilitator in community engaged projects.
