Founded in May 2014, SERIOUS PLAY IMPROV LAB (SPIL) is a monthly music series of KLEX Festival. It is an art laboratory focusing on music experimentation and improvisation. SPIL provides a platform for musicians from various backgrounds to collaborate and present a new collective expression through improvisation. Over the years, many local and international artists have initiated experimentations and collaborated in the SPIL series, enriching the region’s experimental and improvised music scene.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Aris Huzaimi is a passionate musician, educator, and performer. He has been in the industry since 2014 and performed on numerous projects and festivals, both local and international. He has collaborated with a lot of professional musicians, groups, institutions, and organizations such as Bernhard Wulff, Max Riefer, Freiburg Percussion Ensemble, Mannheimer Schlagwerk, and many more. In 2017 Aris started to join the music education industry for young children and teenagers as a one-to-one drums teacher. He helps them to get the best results on their music examinations so they can pursue their talent in music performance.

Musitonik Ensemble’s artistic director Chuang Cheng-Ying studied liuqin/ zhongruan since twelve and finished MMus at Birmingham Conservatoire on countertenor voice in 2007 and a master degree in Landscape Architecture at the UPENN, Philadelphia in 2003. He won the prizes of Taiwan Music Competition in Liuqin Solo and Chinese Orchestra as the conductor for National Taiwan University Chinese Orchestra, Voice Competition by Taipei Philharmonic Foundation, and Cecil Drew Oratorio Prize at Birmingham Conservatoire. He was awarded the Young Star 2008 of Taipei National Concert Hall in and was nominated in 2010 Big Ben Award for Outstanding British Chinese. He taught zhongruan and Chinese Orchestra at the Academy of Music, Suzhou University of Science and Technology during 2015-2016. His unique style as a lute singer between East and West has been seen in Taiwan, UK, US, Canada, Mexico, Austria, Germany, France, China, India, Japan, Turkey, and more.

Kok Siew-Wai started out as a video artist, now active as an improvised vocalist and artist-curator/organizer. She has shown her videos, curatorial video programmes and performed in Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada and USA, including allEars Improvised Music Festival (Norway), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), CTM Festival (Germany), Hanoi New Music Festival (Vietnam), Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Nusasonic (Indonesia) amongst others. Siew-Wai is interested in improvisation and the exploration of expressions with the human voice.

Loke Xiaoyun sings, and plays the piano, the flute, and the Sape. She also has deep interest in different aspects of music and was involved in different academic research projects in music education, music sociology and ethnomusicology. Trained as a classical musician, Xiaoyun first dipped her toes in atonal vocal improvisation when she was a member of Merle Noir. She also draws inspiration from nuances in different ethnic singing styles. Xiaoyun enjoys working with different artists from disciplines, such as dance and visual works. One of her collaborative works was a multi disciplinary project with Seni Tiga #8: Foundry. She also contributed to KLEX Nusasonic Radio Episode #1: So Far So Good in 2020. Apart from performing, Xiaoyun is a music educator with students from different age groups and currently in training to be a Dalcroze Eurhythmics certified instructor.

Sim Hoi Ling is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply influenced by photography. Her work often centers around themes of decay and absurdities in daily life. She is passionate about exploring unconventional methods of image-making, and her diverse body of work includes printmaking, video art, installation, and performance. Her work was presented at festivals across Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, also collected internationally by collectors from the United States, Canada, Germany and Malaysia. She loves collecting sound in her free time and occasionally releases her experimental sound works under the group name DSGN. (dsgn.bandcamp.com).

Tan Bee Hung graduated with Master of Dance at University of Malaya. She is active in the local and international dance scenes, have performed locally in Tari, MyDance Festival, Le French Arts Festival, SounDance by RAW Arts Space, and many performances by Kwang Tung Dance Company; also internationally in Dancing in Asia (Indonesia), Festival Tokyo 2016 (Japan), Goyang International Dance Festival (Korea), the 5th no ballet International Choreography Competition (Germany), Guangdong Modern Dance Festival (Guangzhou, China), CONTACT: A Week of Dance (Singapore). A firm believer that human are natural movers. Tan is currently a Pilates and Gyrotonic® instructor.
