ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
MICHAEL EDWARD EDGERTON (USA) – Voice
Micahel is a composer whose work elides the boundaries of complexity with practical applications of physical and perceptual models. Since the mid-90’s he has been pioneering work with Multidimensionality and Nonlinear Phenomenon applied to sound production and composition. Michael’s compositions have received prizes and/or recognition from: Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart, 2007 (First Prize, Tempo Mental Rap, #72, 2005); Composition Contest of the Netherlands Radio Choir, 2007 (Semifinalist, Kalevi Matus, #58, 2000); 5th Dutilleux International Composition Compétition, 2003 (Sélection, 1 sonata, #70, 2004); 31st Festival Synthese Bourges, 2001 (Sélection, The Elements of Risk in Creation, #59, 2001); MacDowell Club, 1996 (First prize, Unspoken Crime #09, 1988); Friends and Enemies of New Music, 1993 (Selection,Net/Byrinth:Rec.Study I, #15, 1991); Midwest Composers Symposium, 1989 (Selection, A Penny for the Young Guy #3, 1986); National Federation of Music Clubs, 1987 (Third Prize, Ai #5, 1987); National Federation of Music Clubs, 1987 (Honorable Mention, Dwellers of the Southwest, #2, 1986); Michigan State Univ-Orchestral Composition Contest, 1986 (First prize, The Final Diary of a Branch, #1, 1985). His music has been performed by AuditivVokal Dresden, Ekmeles Ensemble, Ensemble Ars Nova, Kairos String Quartet, Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Quartet New Generation, Works-in-Progress Ensemble and soloists Almut Kühne, Andreas Fröhling, Angela Rademacher-Wingerath, Chatschatur Kanajan, Gary Verkade, Jan Heinke, Jeffrey Burns, Mats Möller, Matthias Bauer, Philippe Arnaudet, Rebekka Uhlig, Stefan Östersjö, Timo Kinnunen, among others. Michael is engaged with research into voice, acoustics and perception. His work with the extra-normal voice is internationally known through performances, journal publications and a book, The 21st Century Voice published in the New Instrumentation Series (Scarecrow Press).
LEE CHOY WAN – Dance
Trained in contemporary dance at Kwang Tung Dance Company (KTDC) and is currently one of its main members. Has been actively involved in performances locally and internationally including Germany, China and Singapore. Her own works have been presented in KTDC’s Kua Bu Series, Contact- A Week of Dance 2011 in Singapore, Shantanand Festival of Arts 2014 and ADF Henan,China 2014. She has always been interested in investigating and developing the different ways of inhabiting the body. This curiosity has led her to start studying, practicing and performing Contact Improvisation since 2013. She was also one of the artists in Asia Pacific Impro 2013.
REN XIN – Dance
Danced with T.H.E. Dance Company in Singapore, LeeSaar The Company in NYC, and DPAC Dance Company in Malaysia. Her own works have been presented in MyDance Festival, National University of Singapore Arts Festival, The Esplanade da:ns festival, and International Young Choreographers Project in Taiwan. She has performed with Ng Chor Guan in MUSIC=DANCE improvisation, and presented her Two Minute Solo curated by Marion De Cruz of Five Arts Center. Most recently, Ren Xin presented her movement theatre piece B.E.D. at DPAC, and then collaborated with Japanese dancer Miwa Okuno on a new choreography at T.H.E. Contact festival in Singapore and d’MOTION festival. Currently, she is working on a site-specific creation in Rimbun Dahan.
SUDARSHAN CHANDRA KUMAR – Voice/Electronics
Born 1987, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a freelance graphic designer and video editor who uses his free time to make music. He is a member of HKPT, Takdir and Sorry. He also records and releases music as Sudarshan and Larry Clark. Sudarshan sings, plays the guitar and uses various electronic instruments to create a wholesome musical experience. Citing influences as eclectic as Queen, Enya and John Williams, it is understandable why his performances have a reputation of being an explosion of color and passion. With his signature Kaoss Pad 3s, Sudarshan embarks on using his well established skills of showmanship to bravely tackle the more traditional genres of abstracts, sexuality, gender roles of sexual stereotypes and still lives whilst retaining the quirky and queer style that has proved to be such a hit with the audience and critics.
KOK SIEW-WAI – Voice
KOK is an improvised vocalist. Siew-Wai has been performing since 2003, and has participated in festivals such as Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), Playfreely (Singapore), Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival (Singapore), Improvised and Otherwise Festival (USA) and more. In February 2015, Siew-Wai joined the Ensemble Asia Orchestra led by Otomo Yoshihide, and performed in Tokyo and Kyoto.
YONG YANDSEN – Tenor Sax
YONG is an improvised saxophonist. He has played at the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival, Turn Around Free Jazz & Improvisation Festival amongst others. Yandsen has collaborated with musicians such as Goh Lee Kwang, Ng Chor-Guan, Thierry Monnier, Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Damo Suzuki, Darren Moore, Brian O’ Reily and more. Yandsen’s debut LP of solo saxophone improvisation was released by Doubtful Sound (France) in 2013. Yandsen, together with Moore and O’Reily have formed an improvised trio called Game of Patience and have toured to Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The trio has recently tour Japan in June 2014.
