Serious Play Improv Lab (SPIL 023) on Friday, 13 May will witness the cross-disciplinary collaboration between dance and music improvisers! On the bill are Yeow Lai Chee (dance), Faye Lee (dance), Wong Yok Teng (electric bass), Sudarshan Chandra Kumar (vocals/electronics), Kok Siew-Wai (vocals) and Yong Yandsen (tenor saxaphone). ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

YEOW LAI CHEE: A full-time Public Relations lecturer of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, pursued MA Cultural Management in Northumbria University, UK in 2015. Started performing since 2004 as a vocalist and dancer for Malaysia musical production (Musical on Stage), joined local Butoh dance company Nyoba Kan from 2009-2011 and become a Butoh dance practitioner, then further learning Butoh Notation from Butoh Master Yukio Waguri from Tokyo from 2009 to 2015. Participated and performed a series of Butoh performances in her mother land Malaysia, and other countries including Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Macau, UK and Germany.

FAYE LEE performing art journey began with break-dancing in high school age. 2008, he became one of the principal dancers of Batu Dance Theatre and learning from Vincent Tan Lian Ho. During 2 years of living in Melbourne, he often performed with Tony Yap Company and gained interest in psycho physical improvisation, also contact improv and dance jamming in community events.

WONG YOK TENG is a bassist of local instrumental band NAO.Teng believes that music could become a source of inspiration and eventually shape him into an exceptional character. He aspires to share his ideas and sentiments through music.

SUDARSHAN CHANDRA KUMAR is a musician. He has contributed vocals and live electronics to bands such as HKPT, T!T!T!, and Takdir. His live setup is comprised of loopers, synths and effects pedals which are used to create improvised soundscapes.

YONG YANDSEN is an improvised saxophonist. He has played at the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival (Singapore), Turn Around Free Jazz & Improvisation Festival (Singapore), Music Matters Festival (Sri Lanka) amongst others. Yandsen, together with Darren Moore and Brian O’Reily, form an improvised trio called Game of Patience. They have toured to Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. They released debut CD “Trial and Error” on Herbal International and self released debut LP “The Bad Sleeps Well”.

KOK SIEW-WAI is an improvised vocalist, video artist and independent artist-organizer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She’s performed in festivals such as Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, SoundBridge Contemporary Music Festival, Choppa Experimental Music Festival (Singapore), Playfreely Festival (Singapore), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), E-Poetry Festival (USA) and more.

ABOUT SERIOUS PLAY IMPROV LAB (SPIL) SERIES:

SPIL is a project of the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX) launched in May 2014. It aims to create exposure and understanding, and to facilitate local and international collaboration and exchange for experimental and improvised music in Malaysia.
