SPIL 015 is here! Our July lab initially features Brian O’Reilly (USA/Singapore, contrabass/electronics), YONG Yandsen (tenor saxophone), KOK Siew-Wai (voice) and Miyi (voice). However, three additional guests have just been added to the bill today as they’d like to join the fun! They are performers of the upcoming Nyoba Kan International Butoh Fest in Kuala Lumpur, which is happening in August. The additional players are: Mimi Jeong (South Korea/Germany, dance), Julien Brun (Switzerland/Germany, set & lighting design), Laurent Schaer (Switzerland, video & lighting). ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
BRIAN O’REILLY (USA/Singapore) works within the fields of electro-acoustic composition, sound installations, moving images and noise music. Also he is a contrabassist focusing on uncovering the inaudible textures and hidden acoustic microsounds of his instrument through the integration of electronic treatments and extended playing techniques.
MIMI JEONG (Germany/S.Korea) is a south Korean choreographer and dancer based in Berlin, Germany. In 2005 She received her degree at the Folkwang University in Essen, Germany and since 2003 has been working as a dancer and a choreographer in the Theater Bremen, Theater Münster, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Akademie der Künste Berlin, Compagnie Anna Huber, bodytalk Köln, steptext Bremen, Nyoba kan Butoh dance group Malaysia and a multimedia group Urbanscreen Bremen with numerous choreographers like Pina Bausch, Reinhild Hoffmann, Urs Dietrich, Emanuel Gat, Rami Be’er, Ingun Bjonsgaard, Tero Saarinen, Henrietta Horn, Samir Akika, Kuo-Chu Wu, Daniel Goldin, Anna Huber and Swee Keong Lee. 2008 she started to create her own dance pieces and performed them in Theater Bremen. She has also been invited as a choreographer to different Festivals like Extra Frei, Tanz Bremen and Freier Tanz im Delta in Theater Felina Areal Mannheim. Parallel to her work she is currently receiving a Master degree in Choreography (MAC) in the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT).
LAURENT SCHAER (Switzerland) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Geneva University in 2002, Laurent Schaer develops a multipurpose technical activity, through many projects in music and theater. Between 2003 and 2012, he works as a lighting director in the theater & concert hall. As an independent light designer, he’s used to work with several companies and artists, like Perrine Valli (contemporary danse – 8 creations since 2010), Cie Ad- Apte (contemporary theater), La Dernière Tangente (multidisciplinary performances, 3 creations since 2009). As technical director and operator, he’s assuming several events (Les Hivernales Rock’n Beat Festival – Nyon/CH, Fête de la Danse – Lausanne/CH) and tour management for many dance and theater companies. He regularly works within the formations of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Western Switzerland. In parallel, he’s pursuing an aesthetic and dynamic research through the video media, mainly using interlacement between live and recorded feed, produced and mixed in real time. Those experiments lead him to work especially with contemporary theater projects – company insanë: Codes (2011), Dieu est un DJ (2012) – live music events – twice laureate of the price “Création de la Fête de la Musique Nyon/Yverdon” (CH) with Meïan: La boîte à musique (2011) and VoidPloy (2012) – as well as contemporary dance – Milla Koistinen: False (2013). JULIEN BRUN (Switzerland/Germany) is a multi-tooled scenic artist, working on set & lighting design, as well as on stage directing and temporary architecture. He has always been interested in the melting of scenic modes of expression and in the creation of new works in the contemporary arts. Having been training and performing for a long time as a circus artist in Switzerland and Russia, he discovered himself a strong attraction to the scenic creation. Thus he begins in 2004 to design lighting for several shows, concerts and theater plays. Parallel, he creates and directs the Monniati Festival (from 2004 to 2008), a festival of multidisciplinary arts in Geneva and works as an artistic consultant for several cultural events in Switzerland. In 2007, he joined the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Berlin’s Opera), as an assistant director. He participated to the creation of the new productions of the season. It is also there that he directed his first professional staging, creating Kosmos 20, a show of the Opera’s experimental series. Subsequently, Julien Brun decided to perfect his knowledge of the stage and theater in following the formation of Production at the National Theatre School of Canada, from 2007 to 2010. This school has provided him an important technical and artistic background. Julien Brun is now continuing his work of research and exploration of various modes of artistic expression, particularly of set & lighting design, stage directing and temporary architecture; in creating works with his own company insanë; in working for several cultural events; in teaching to theatre students; and in working in collaboration with many directors, choreographers and designers across Europe and North America.
YONG YANDSEN (Malaysia) is an improvised saxophonist. He has played at the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival, Turn Around Free Jazz & Improvisation Festival amongst others. Yandsen, together with Darren Moore and Brian O’Reily, form an improvised trio called Game of Patience. They have toured to Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. They recently release their debut album “Trial and Error” on Herbal International label in Malaysia.
KOK SIEW-WAI (Malaysia) is an improvised vocalist, video artist and independent artist-organizer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She’s performed in festivals such as Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Playfreely Festival (Singapore), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), E-Poetry Festival (USA) and more. She is the festival director & curator of the artist-run Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX) since 2010.
MIYI (Malaysia) has just started to try experimenting with the human voice.
